I wonder, why do they want everything metroified? If it is simply to change theme, they could just change theme. When it's possible to make the interface inconsistent, they don't hesitate... Afterwards, I have the impression that it's also because metro interfaces take the user freedom.

Afterwards, I have the impression that it's also because metro interfaces take the user freedom. I do not expect most of third-party apps to switch to Metro interfaces. Even Microsoft itself abandoned the idea with their browser and with Skype. At most, some apps will hardcode Metro-like look and become unthemable.
Notice how difficult it is to develop XAML code: it took several years for them just to develop taskbar, and still it does not have the traditional functionality (taskbar placement, size adjustment, etc).

Hmm that's not a good development. I'll start testing with windows 11 iot LTSC, let's see how that will work out.

Hello there, long time WinClassic user from back on the thinkpad forums when I modded my Win8 ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/6513581/images/ZDksWgvmyQWlHaRFfo0Z.png) Glad to have found those forums ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/6513581/images/ZDksWgvmyQWlHaRFfo0Z.png) Been dragging my Win7 up until now but I am getting a new laptop for a byod work environment so not much choice, I need to install 10 or 11. I suppose 11 is still better for drivers etc? Anyway, it is unthinkable for me not to have Classic Theme. Can I use the guide in first post to implement it, is it still up to date? I see some worrying messages in the last couple of ones, does it mean Classic theme won't be possible with future Win11 updates? thanks for your help!

Hello leb , and welcome to the WinClassic forum !
Since the days of the ThinkPad forum, activating the classic theme has become much simpler, and above all more stable. As it stands, it is possible to use the classic theme with almost no bugs (except perhaps on the most recent versions of Windows 11, but I'm not sure, someone needs to confirm). The method presented by anixx consists of using ClassicThemeTray with scheduled tasks. Then, several techniques allow you to correct the display of certain elements. With Windhawk, you just need to install the right mods to fix almost anything. Apart from Windhawk, you also need to install: - A patched version of OpenShell to fix the taskbar - The old task manager, or patch the current task manager - To demetroify many elements, to obtain a consistent display with the classic theme

I see some worrying messages in the last couple of ones, does it mean Classic theme won't be possible with future Win11 updates? The taskbar in Win11 has hardcoded theme (although in newer releases it can be displayed normally under Classic theme, it does not really fit the looks). The old, Win10 taskbar is also still available under Win11 but this is going to change in the future.
As such, your options currently are:
* Using Win10 - it is expected that classic theme compatibility will be retained in all future releases of Win10
* Using Win11 21H2 build 22000 - this is the original production release of Win11. The compatibility with the classic theme is essentially the same as in Win10, but you should stay on this build and only receive cumulative updates.
* Using Win11 23H2 build 22631 - this is the current mainstream release. You would need the file ExplorerFrame.dll from build 22000 though. Provided that, the compatibility with the Classic theme is the same as on build 22000 or Win10. There is a hope that the glitches in ExplorerFrame.dll could be fixed by some Windhawk mod in the future. Again, you should stay on this version, as later versions will bring more troubles. You would have to store a reserve copy of ExplorerFrame.dll as the cumulative updates replace it.

!Note! Instead of points 2,3,4,5,6 you can use these Windhawk mods:
Is it just me or I can't get the Windhawk mod for [Enable Classic Theme] to work at all? Everything is still the default Win10 UI. When I used the older step (via CTT), I already got a Classic Theme working at this stage, albeit very broken. I would really like to get the newer Windhawk step to work, though. Anyone know what might have I done wrong?
