Using the DWM patch method with BasicThemer 2 (and optionally DwmUnExtendFrame) looks pretty good.
I think the simplest method to switch theme on startup is using a Aero-enabled theme with your desired color scheme then stopping the Themes service on startup.

out of curiosity, how did you get this theme working with a custom titlebar gradient + font? i think it's a pretty good clone all things considered, but the lack of easy customization compared to the actual classic theme is kind of a dealbreaker for me

Otherwise the titlebar button size and the colour scheme would be different.

The patched dwm.exe from Classic AE mod 8 megapack from www.winclassic.net/thread/494/acceleration-gui-aero-themes-windows makes DWM not disable when switching to the classic theme with the title bar of the previous theme, and BasicThemer 2 replaces the themed title bar with the actual classic one.

First, completely kill dwm.exe in the task manager, then run the following in admin cmd: takeown /a /f dwm.exe icacls dwm.exe /grant Administrators:F move dwm.exe dwm.exe.bak
Now unpack the zip and move Patch dwm.exe\Win7 (your architecture)\dwm.exe to %windir%\system32 then reboot. After reboot, set your theme to any Aero theme, and again to the classic theme.
