I work at a PC repair shop, so as you can imagine, I work with a lot of different computers. Most of them are running either Windows 7 or Windows 8, and sometimes Windows 10 (we have had customers asking us to downgrade their PC from Windows 10 a few times actually). I've noticed that it's become quite rare to have a computer with Windows XP or even Vista. The only time I really see an XP computer is when people donate their old ones. My boss' computer still has XP on it, but he wants me to upgrade it for him very soon.
As for me, I have about four old Dell Dimension desktops from the early 2000s that people have just given to me, but only one of them has a hard drive with an OS installed on it, that OS being Windows XP Professional. I also have an old Gateway that belonged to my grandparents, which originally ran Windows 98. They eventually upgraded it to Windows 2000, and later Windows XP. Eventually the hard drive died, so they gave it to me and I gave it a new drive with Windows 2000 on it. I have another old white no-brand desktop with Windows XP with no service packs on it, but it currently doesn't seem to want to boot. The only other computer I have that has an older version of Windows on it is a Dell PowerEdge 840 server running Windows Server 2003. I found this one in a dumpster (along with another custom built server) with no hard drives, and it took over a year for me to get it to work (I didn't know how to configure the RAID settings, so it wouldn't detect any hard drives). So I still have quite a few computers running some old version of Windows. Of course I don't use them every day, but I still have them.
So what about you guys? What old PCs do you guys have sitting around at home? Are there any old PCs at your work/school that are still running XP or some other older OS?
And no, virtual machines don't count.

I have two Acer Aspire 3680s. Both came with Windows Vista RTM. One runs MicroXP (it has a smashed screen, so I use an external one), and the other runs various builds of Windows Longhorn. Heh.
Pre-reset DCE/DWM works pretty well on them :3
(It's a shame neither have working Wi-Fi connectivity... .______. )

Yeah, I'd like to try installing Longhorn on one of these old PCs at some point. Problem is, a lot of them are missing certain components, mainly hard drives and RAM.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I also have a Gateway Desktop with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 that won't boot because I messed up the partitions after uninstalling Linux from it.

My mom's computer has Windows 98 on it- honestly ,I prefer that over this Windows 10 piece of garbage- Windows 10 is so complicated to use, and most of it requires the internet.
There once were simpler times...

One thing I really don't like about Microsoft is that they stopped supporting Windows XP, even though it had a ton of potential. The 64 bit version of Windows XP could have been the last new Windows version if they kept updating it and made it less vulnerable to viruses, but they really had to give us Windows Vista for some reason. Thankfully they released Windows 7 soon after. I swear, if I could install Windows 7 and keep the Windows 8/10 metro apps, I'd probably do that.

As much as I like Windows XP, I do understand why they stopped supporting it. They are a profit company, so they need to make money. If they just kept updating XP, they wouldn't make money from newer versions of Windows, especially with their new business model of 'Windows as a service' they've adopted with Windows 10. Not to mention, it costs them money for them to maintain it since it's almost 15 years old now.
But hey, like I said, I've still got a few systems running XP/Server 2003 (and heck, I still got my old Win2000 as well), so it hasn't stopped me. That being said, I do primarily use Windows 7 nowadays.

The problem is not in supporting XP or not. The problem is that the newer versions of Windows are not incremental improvements and get a lot of features scrapped or broken. Also the quality degraded significantly. People who work at Microsoft tell that their internal atmosphere had changed significantly since Bill Gates resigned.
P.S. The 32-bit version of Windows XP still gets updates till 2019. The problem is a lot of third party software does not support it.

Well yeah, XP can still get updates with the Embedded tweak, but I usually use Server 2003 when I'm using anything NT 5.x, so no updates there.
And yes, I do agree that Windows seems to get worse with every new version. I mean there have certainly been some improvements, but overall there's a lot to be desired, especially in comparison to older versions. Microsoft is not the same company it used to be, that's for sure. But hey, we're still finding ways to make Windows better here, so it's not all bad.

My work computer has Win 10 which I HATE.

I really hope Windows 7 & 8.1 get the same community treatment that XP has gotten, because I'm holding off on upgrading to 10 for as long as possible. My work computer has Win 10 which I HATE. My work computer has Win 10 which I HATE. win 10 with spyware and apps deleted + everything that wasnt in 7 gone classicthemea.exe classicshell and the classic3.msstyles taskbar for startisback + tclock configured to run reactos version of timedate.cpl which i put in same folder as tclock gets the win95/nt4 especially with kbswitch.exe from reactos for a colored languagebar so feels like a mix between win95 xp (cause of languagebar) and i added a modernclassic theme to classicshell just for the heck of it . So i do not hate win10 just takes some work of getting things running properly and im on the newest stuff with deleted spyware and apps  The fake metrostartmenu is gone i just havn't found a way to bring back the win7 flyout for network. |

I have a laptop and a desktop, the laptop runs 8.1 regular, which normally it started out with but I upgraded it to 10 for more support, then my dad got privacy issues with 10, had me put 7 on it, then finally 8.1 and then he let me have it. My desktop runs "patched" 8.1 Pro. Both of them have the Windows 8 RP theme with Aero glass.

This subject may be a little old but here's my case: I still run my desktop on windows 7 but back when I upgraded to IE 11 from IE 9 the classic blue 3d webpage scrollbar was replaced with an UGLY 1 like Win.10. I'd sure like to know if & how I can get it back as I'm thinking it's buried somewhere. I don't want to go back to IE 9 to get it either. I hope someone chimes in & can help.

I have several old PCs, in fact I have over 20 computers total and I don't even remember what I have most of the time lol, however I'll just list what I have off of the top of my head so hopefully I remember everything. One common theme here is that I like to have period correct computers with period correct operating systems, and generally I like high end hardware as well as weird/unique hardware, so I tend not to really collect low end junk (although somehow it still comes my way) - Custom-Built PC circa 2017. (specs: Ryzen 1700x, 16GB DDR4, Radeon RX 580 8GB, 500GB 970 EVO+ NVMe SSD, MSI X370 SLI Plus motherboard). Runs Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 1809 x64. This is my main system I use daily.
- 2016 MacBook Pro 15". (specs: i7-6820HQ, 16GB LPDDR3, Radeon Pro 455 2GB/Intel HD 530, 512GB NVMe SSD). Runs macOS 10.15.2 Catalina & Windows 10 Pro 1909 x64. This is my main laptop, used on almost a daily basis as well.
- Microsoft Surface Pro (1st gen). (specs: i5-3317U, 4GB DDR3, Intel HD 4000, 128GB mSATA SSD, Surface Power Cover keyboard) Runs Windows 10 Pro 1909 x64. This is just a throw around PC as it's tablet duties have been replaced by a 2018 iPad Pro. 1909 is an absolute dog on this thing btw.
- Custom-Built PC circa 2006. (specs: C2D E6700, 4GB DDR2, Radeon HD 2900 GT 256MB, 750GB SATA HDD, Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 motherboard). Runs Windows XP MCE 2005. This is a dedicated PC I built for mid-late 2000s games. Pretty overkill but I love it.
- Custom-Built PC circa 2001. (specs: P3 Tualatin 1400, 512MB PC133, GeForce3 Ti200 64MB, 160GB IDE HDD, MSI 694T-Pro motherboard). Has no OS at this time but plans are for Windows 98 SE. Built this one to play 90s Windows games. Again overkill but I really like it.
- Custom-Built PC circa 1999. (specs: Celeron 433, 128MB PC133, Nvidia TNT2, 20GB IDE HDD, Gigabyte 440LX baby AT motherboard). Runs Windows 98 SE. Was my old 98 box until I put together the P3 Tualatin build.
- HP Vectra VL400. (specs: P3 Coppermine 800, no RAM atm, but had 512MB at one point, Radeon 9600 XT 128MB, 80GB IDE HDD). Runs Windows 2000 Professional. Just a spare 98/2000 box.
- Dell Precision M4300. (specs: C2D T8100, no RAM atm Quadro FX 350?, 240GB Gigabyte SATA SSD). No OS on it yet. This one is in a bit of disrepair atm, and I don't remember the detailed specs as it's been sitting for a while, but I plan on making this my Vista time capsule.
- Lenovo ThinkPad T420s. (specs: i5-2520M, 4GB DDR3, Intel HD 3000, no SSD atm). No OS atm, again this machine is also in disrepair, this one is going to be my Windows 7 time capsule. I have a fondness for this generation of ThinkPad as my main laptop for several years before my MBP was a T420.
- Lenovo ThinkPad R61. (specs: C2D T7200, 4GB DDR2, Intel GMA 965, 120GB SanDisk SATA SSD). Runs Windows Server 2008 R2. This is a little server I run for backups and network printing. Will get the upgrade to 2012 R2 eventually once I have some time due to 2008 R2 being EOL as of last week.
- Lenovo ThinkPad T60. (specs: C2D T7600, 4GB DDR2, Radeon X1300, 250GB SATA HDD). Runs Windows XP Professional. This is one of many XP laptops I own, I am a huge fan of ThinkPads and the T60 is one of the best models made imo.
- IBM ThinkPad R51. (specs: Pentium M 725, 2GB DDR, Intel GMA 845/865, 40GB IDE HDD). Runs Windows XP Professional. This was my first ever laptop, keeping it for nostalgia reasons.
- Dell Latitude C610. (specs: P3 Tualatin 1000, 256MB PC133, AT Radeon 7500, 30GB IDE HDD). Runs Windows 2000 Professional. Just another one in the collection.
- Asus Eee PC 701. (specs: Celeron 900, 1GB DDR2, Intel GMA 915, 8GB IDE SSD). Runs Windows XP Home Edition. This is the first ever netbook, originally shipped with a flavour of Linux called Xandros, however with a bit of effort I shoehorned XP onto it. It runs as well as you'd probably expect given it's 900 MHz processor and terribly slow SSD lol.
I do have several other machines, a few more desktops as well as a few more laptops but I really don't care much about them, except a Toshiba Satellite running Win95 that I don't know a whole lot about (I think it's a 120 MHz Pentium or something like that). I mostly just listed stuff that I plan on keeping. I do have more stuff I'd like to add to my collection at some point, particularly more ThinkPads as well as some vintage Macs, and whatever other weird stuff comes my way (I'd love an XO-1 or a Toshiba Libretto someday). But yeah, that's my computer hoarding problem collection.

any tutorial will only show win8 network layout and not 7. So true and that regedit file will work too . you should probably press reiku on github to try to make an injected dll into that or ask startisback author to opensource the project |
