I was wondering if anyone here has figured out a way or even attempted to replace Windows 10 Explorer.exe with explorer.exe from windows 7, This is probably a silly question and wouldnt work, I just wonder if there is a way to do something like this, Basically replace windows 10 ui with windows 7, I know what Microsoft has done with windows 10 has made this seem impossible to do.
I have tinkered around a fair amount with disabling certain services and have witnessed it cause some strange behavior
disabling certain services causes sihost.exe or explorer.exe to go haywire (it seems like it just constantly restarts explorer or it crashes and restarts over and over forever or something like that).
I remember reading something about SCT that it can disable that?
If it were possible, I wouldnt mind just completely replacing windows 10 shell with something else altogether.
I have had windows 10 boot up before where explorer.exe didnt load at all and its just a black screen with mouse cursor, interestingly enough I could open up task manager and run programs. I mean since that is possible it must be possible to replace explorer altogether somehow.
I would not at all mind figuring out a way to do this.
If anyone knows how to do this, knows of any resources that talk about this sort of thing or have any ideas on how to accomplish this or even just disabling explorer.exe and replacing it with somethign else. please post it here, I would be very interested to hear about it.
I am going to try and do it and see what happens and post results if I find anything interesting.

People have tried this before, it's impossible. You get 0x000000142 (or something like that) when you try to run it.
But if you just want to replace explorer, there are alternate shells like Cairo shell available.

What exactly do you want to do?
In Windows 10 or 11 the explorer is basically the same as in Windows 7. Do you want the old start menu back or what?
There is Open Shell program that replaces the start menu.

I just want everything to look the same as windows 7 explorer and function the same lol, Its not the same, its sort of the same, but its just not the same, wah!

I mean there was a Windows 7 Explorer port to Windows 8, and Windows 10 Explorer port to Windows 11 but I think those were different circumstances. Honestly I just miss the old address bar/search bar height from windows Vista-Windows 10 1909, and I miss the navigation pane height (which I know can be changed with open-shell but it's not the same). It's not like anyone just has the source code for Explorer around somewhere lol

The only difference I know between Win10 Explorer and Win7 Explorer is the look of the taskbar buttons. Did you mean something else?
Do you want back the taskbar or file manager?

I want back both, but more so the file manager, when I really look at it, it is the theme, I want the aero theme back with transparency and smaller minimize maximize x buttons, without having to use windows blinds, I do miss it, do you know of a way?

For the file manager, use OldNewExplorer. You can also use RibbonDisabler.

If you want the FULL Windows 7 theme with no imperfections, it's currently impossible to get smaller window buttons (minimize maximize etc) without WindowBlinds. Aero Glass is possible using a program from glass8.eu, but it only supports up to 1909. The taskbar can be skinned with StartIsBack (paid), or WindowBlinds of course. For Start Menu, just use the latest nightly version of Open-Shell, which has a patch that allows it to coexist with WindowBlinds or StartIsBack. |

Thats what actually bugs me the most, the button size, man it bugs the heck out of me having tablet ui on a pc. and the two control panels, making it very difficult to remove uneeded service, the list goes on, I have windows 10 ame on my second pc and I have been tinkering around with it trying to get it to a state I find acceptable to use as my daily driver, it appears to have got to the point that it is now less work to use linux now, I never thought I would see that day, I dont know if its just me, but to have an operating system that does not upload so much telemetry, or any telemetry at all, is able to be customized and is tweakable without having an update reverse all the settings I changed and is designed for a pc is quite important to me.
I like being able to have ultimate say of what my os does, and I know there are still ways you can do that with windows 10, but the way microsoft is heading its getting to be more and more that Microsoft decides most everything and the user is expected to just abide by the changes Microsoft makes to their computers, It almost feels like my pc belongs to Microsoft when I am using windows 10.
I never thought I wouldnt like windows but it has got to that point where I dont think I will be using it anymore. I still have it on my secondary pc but I have moved to Endeavor OS as my main OS and I still have win 7 on a second drive, dual booting for now, once I get everything set up and all the software installed that I need, I am probably just going to format it. Sad to say. Microsoft is killing windows imo.
I will still tinker with windows 10 on my second computer and see how much I can change windows 10 back to windows 7 in the way it functions, just for fun though.
(You can stop the telemetry with things like rasberry pihole but I think to beable to have a functional windows 10 os that updates regularly you are going to have to allow the telemetry to an extent which is unacceptable for me, because its literally built into the windows update service. So yeah you can get rid of much of it by running windows AME script but then you lose the ability to update as that removes the Windows update services and the Activation services and a few other ones that have the Microsoft telemetry system built into them. So its not really a long term solution, its just sad, Windows 7 was a really awesome Operating system, its just too bad Microsoft has decided to go down this path, imo)
