...what specifically does this destroy? The Start Screen? The metro Wi-fi dialog? The Charms bar? Metro Apps? Just saying "Metro" could mean a lot of different things. It'd be nice if you could be a bit more specific.

It kills the Metro thread inside the Explorer process. Even if one does not use Metro, it still consumes surprisingly a lot of processing power and works with the hard drive.
When using W8Classic under Windows 8 there are usually 3 ghost icons appearing in Alt+Tab after waking up from sleep. This icons no longer appear if Metro killed.
P.S. This forum would be much better if one could attach files.

I am aware of the memory issue, but what are the side effects? I never use metro, but I do use the Wi-Fi panel in Windows 8. Would that be affected? Are there any known side effects or risks? Are the effects of this completely undone if Explorer is restarted? When using W8Classic under Windows 8 there are usually 3 ghost icons appearing in Alt+Tab after waking up from sleep. This icons no longer appear if Metro killed. Oh that seems useful. P.S. This forum would be much better if one could attach files. I'll...talk to R.O.B. about that.

It is not affected by metrokiller. All other metro apps no longer can be used. The script as of now should be started only once after Explorer started. If started second time it can terminate random thread in Explorer. Yes.

I actually don't use w8classic on my host machine - I need the Visual Style engine to be active in order to...you know...make Visual Styles >.<

The solution for this is to use an alternative such as PE Network Manager for managing your WiFi connections.

Unless PE Network Manager or another alternative can provide a similar tray icon-based access method, that is... ...has anyone found the DLLs for any System tray interfaces?

PE Network Manager has a system tray icon. As far as I know, no one has gotten the Windows 7 system tray interface to work on Windows 8, but I wouldn't say it's impossible to get it to work.
As far as the actual DLL files for the Windows network UI, I'm not entirely sure, but I would think it's probably in NetworkExplorer.dll or NetShell.dll. I could be wrong about that though, but at least that's a start.

I use the following vbs script so to make it not display any windows:
Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") objShell.Run "C:\FxxkMetro\FxxkMetro.exe", 0

I am using fxxkmetro with Windows 8.1. One issue with it is that when metro is killed, Explorer gets too long to terminate when shutting down or rebooting or logging off. I now fixed this problem by creating these scripts and modifying accordingly the Classic Shell menu items. logoff.zip (745 B)

In Win10 Metro is in separate process, one simply can rename its executable or use the shell command taskkill to kill it.
